The W10873801 is a genuine OEM compressor start device, also known as a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) relay, designed for Whirlpool-built refrigerators. It attaches directly to the side of the compressor and works in tandem with the run capacitor to initiate the cooling cycle. When the thermostat calls for cooling, this device provides the high-torque electrical impulse required to overcome the motor's inertia. Common symptoms of failure include the refrigerator clicking but not cooling, the compressor staying warm without running, or the unit being completely silent despite having power. A failed start relay is a primary cause of "no-cool" conditions and should be replaced to prevent long-term damage to the compressor motor.
